Sweet Ways to Help Local Charities

Eat your Heart Out!

By Nicole Cerquitella, Publisher May 4, 2021

Montgomery County is home to a number of nonprofit organizations doing outstanding work in our community.  This week, I wanted to tell you about Rainbow Place and about The Tree House CAC of Montgomery County.  As you will read below, the work done by these two organizations is unique but both provide critical supports to those most vulnerable in our area.

Coincidentally, both have cookie related fundraisers going on right now, and everyone loves cookies!  So order up some cookie dough, or enter a cookie decorating contest and enjoy a sweet treat while supporting a local organization in its mission to serve.

Rainbow Place

Rainbow Place is an emergency shelter. It works with women at the very beginning of their transition out of homelessness. Their primary focus is to keep the women served safe during the harsh winter months and help transition them out of homelessness. They are open from November 1 - March 31. Guests receive a warm, safe place to sleep, a hot dinner, breakfast, a bag lunch, shower, laundry facilities, access to case management, and referrals to local social service and treatment programs.

The Tree House CAC of Montgomery County

The Tree House CAC of Montgomery County in Maryland is dedicated to reducing trauma and promoting healing for child and adolescent victims of sexual abuse, physical abuse, and neglect. Through an innovative collaborative process between the private and public sectors, key professionals come together on behalf of the best interests of victims. This effective early intervention is essential to ensure that an abused child or adolescent develops into a healthy and productive adult, capable of forming trusting and loving relationships. Underpinning the work of The Tree House is the belief that the cycle of child abuse can be broken and the knowledge that child abuse and neglect is preventable!

FUNDRAISER - 2021 Virtual Tour de Cookie and NEW Cookie Decorating Contest!

The Tree House holds an annual non-competitive, fun-filled bike ride that appeals to both children and children-at-heart in Montgomery County and other areas near and far.

The 2021 event has been modified to be a virtual event. In years past, riders choose among multiple routes to ride, stopping at cookie stands to collect treats along the way. In addition to the certified routes we’ve used in the past for live events, this year we will encourage families and individuals to register and do a casual ride in their own neighborhood or along any trail they choose and submit photos that will be posted online after the 2-week virtual event concludes.

New Cookie Decorating Contest!

All Tour de Cookie registrants are eligible to enter! But you can still join even if you’re not riding.

Click here to register for the Cookie Decorating Contest. (Scroll down the list of rider registrations and choose the cookie contest only).

The deadline to submit a photo of your completed cookies is May 10, 2021 at 5:00 p.m. Please submit the photo of your decorated cookies to cj.timme@treehousemd.org with the subject line: Cookie Decorating Submission. Include the name of the registrant (and age if they are 10 or younger; we want to know so we can judge fairly). Winners will be announced on Sunday, May 16th!
