Cultivate Your Child's Independence

Home Day Hero Saves the Day!

By Stacey Band, Founder Home Day Hero and Nicole Cerquitella, Publisher June 30, 2020

Been a long few months and feeling tired and frustrated?

Let’s shift the scenario!   Montessori approaches to the rescue!

Stacey Band, founder of Home Day Hero, has 11 years of teaching experience, is a certified Montessori teacher, holds degrees in Child Development and Public Administration, and is also a mom of two. She loves helping parents identify opportunities and guiding children to learn about their potential.  In this article, Stacey offers us invaluable ways to promote independence in our children by empowering them!

3 Categorizes of Activities to Promote Independence:

1.  Care of Self: How can your child take part in some of the daily routines and help themselves?

-Set out two interchangeable outfits, so the child can choose from these limited options.

-In the bathroom is hand soap accessible? Can they reach the water faucet or do they need a step stool? Is there a hand towel that is positioned low enough for the child to reach independently?

-In the kitchen area, is there a space available for small plates, bowls, and eating utensils? If these items are available, are there also a limited number of breakfast food items that are available to enjoy?

2.Care of Others: In what ways can your child help others?

-Assist with food prep related activities

-Help put cleaned groceries away

-Assist in matching socks or folding small cloths

3.Care of our Environment: How can your child care for their environment or their belongings within your home?

-Return toys and books to shelf or bin

-Take dirty dishes to the sink

-Place shoes, coats, bags in a set location

By making slight modifications, you create an environment where the child can learn to function independently; even if an adult is overseeing the activities, the child is interacting with the environment. These opportunities should be created by utilizing items that you already have available and positioning or organizing them safely, while providing accessibility.
