The Night Fairy: Big Adventure in a Miniature World

Disclosure: I received complimentary tickets in exchange for my honest review.

What would you do if you had to find your way in a strange new world? In The Night Fairy, the first show in Imagination Stage's 2014-2015 season, Flory the night fairy has to learn how to survive in the daytime after being attacked by a bat. Based on the book by Baltimore author and Newberry Medal winner Laura Amy Schlitz, The Night Fairy is a beautiful story with a powerful message of creativity, resilience, determination and friendship.

After losing her wings in a bat attack, Flory finds herself in a garden in the middle of the day. Flory has to make sense of her new surroundings if she wants to survive, and she has to get to know the creatures who share her new backyard home. A wren, squirrel, hummingbird, spider and raccoon all cross Flory's path, and she learns to bargain, stand up for herself and care for others...just in time to cross paths with the bat who attacked her.
“The Night Fairy is a high stakes adventure story of survival and friendship that takes place in miniature,” says Artistic Director Janet Stanford. “From their seats in the Lerner Theatre, our audience will feel like tiny insects inside a huge-scale world taken right from their own back yards!”

Using images projected onto a gauzy backdrop, the stage really is transformed into a giant garden filled with tiny creatures. Flory's bat attack is depicted mostly through images cascading across the screen, making it less scary for little ones who may not completely follow what's happening in the opening scene. My five year old loved the show, and the messages of resilience, cooperation and friendship were perfect for a kindergartener navigating her way in the big world of elementary school.
