Welcome to the Neighborhood SUGO!

An Italian Heaven, one small plate at a time!

By Lani Mark April 24, 2012
We were thrilled to be invited to the pre-opening event at SUGO in Park Potomac on Monday night.  When I first received the invite, I could not wait to invite my dad, who being from NY, is a self-proclaimed Italian and Pizza connoisseur.  SUGO comes to us from the fabulous minds behind Cava (which happens to be my favorite Greek restaurant).

SUGO Cicchetti is a new idea in Italian dining.  Instead of huge, family-style Italian meals that we have become so accustomed to, SUGO serves Italian food, tapas style.  The menu is designed so that each person can order two to three small plates or one to two small plates and Neapolitan-style pizza (10" each - and enough to serve two to three).

The prices all seem very reasonable with pizzas ranging from $10-$15, pastas ranging from $6-$12, and hot and cold small plates ranging from $6 to $16 each.  There are also amazing meatballs, cheeses and charcuterie available, along with an extensive bar featuring some delicious signature cocktails (be sure and try the Amaretto Sour- made with homemade sour mix) and Sangria.  The atmosphere lends itself to being a great lunch or after-work spot filled with several long bars to eat at, as well as two and four top tables.  The decor is filled with mosaic titles, and beautiful dark hardwood, and offers a great view of the open kitchen and pizza oven.

After sampling several amazing small plates, our favorites included the Onion Love pizza (caramelized onions, shallots, goat cheese and truffles), the Smoked Salmon (served cold with lentils) and the Green Eggs & Ham (deviled eggs, crispy pancetta, truffle and basil oils).  I also really enjoyed the veal SUGO slider and will definitely be ordering everything I tried again!

As my dad said, the only problem we foresee with SUGO is how packed they are going to be once they open for business on May 2nd.  I hope you all have a chance to head over to Park Potomac and try SUGO soon!
