Anger and Aggression in Marriage

By Kentlands Psychotherapy February 17, 2021

All marriages come with their own set of challenges. No couple is immune to the trials and tribulations that come with long-term relationships. While some married couples fight, excessive anger and aggression are something that needs to be dealt with by a professional before trouble occurs. Anger isn’t necessarily a detrimental emotion, everyone deals with anger on a regular basis. Anger is only troublesome when it occurs in excess or comes with damaging behaviors. Passive-aggressive behaviors and anger can ruin a long-term relationship if one or both parties do not agree to get professional marriage counseling from a qualified individual.

Yelling is not always a sign that there is an anger or aggression issues. Often times, individuals who exhibit anger and aggression do not classify themselves as an angry individual. Frequent anger outbursts that begin to disrupt an individual’s everyday life is considered a problem, especially if aggressive behaviors follow. Anger and aggression (physical and emotional) will ruin interpersonal relationships, cause work-related problems, and take a toll on activities that were once enjoyable.

Warning Signs of Passive-Aggressive Behavior

Passive-aggressive behavior is just as detrimental as physical and emotional aggression. Unfortunately, it is much more difficult to pinpoint. Passive-aggressive behavior can be exhibited by task procrastination, sulking, silent-treatment, sub par performance on everyday tasks, unwillingness to talk through a situation, cutting off communication with the words “fine,” “whatever,” or “okay.”

Any of the above issues may need to be dealt with by a professional.
