The County Fair, A Great Place For Family Memories

By Angela Myers Scollar July 30, 2026

Some of my favorite memories include visits to the county fair. From the animal barns to the to guy who cares sculptures with a chain saw, there is something for everyone.
Every summer when I began to see the signs on the sides of the buses announcing the fair dates, my gut was hit with a flood of mixed emotion.  The empending arrival if the fair meant I would soon embark on one of the d most fun events of the season, but it also meant the fun of freedom of summer was nearing an end. The voice in my head would say, "Angie, don't think about it, just focus on the fair.
As a child the fair was an opportunity to bond with my older sister. Although she was 6 years older, as we whirled around the Kilamonjaro ride holding on for dear life, all of our differences disappeared into thin air. We were laughing too hard to speak, and the no one could hear us over the choruses of " It's My Life,"  if we could, but in our heads we were bo
When our kids were older,we would make plans to bring the cousins to the fair together. Then the focus became the animal barns. I will never forget the time we all learned that sheep most definitely don't say Baa", when one of the kids perched in their stroller was unpleasantly surprised when the fluffy friend bellowed their greeting.
Then there was the time when the kids were a little older and convinced  both of us that we most definitely need to add a pet rabbit to our menagerie. It was always something different every year. The time one of them was gifted a  giant stuffed animal despite not really winning the game and the gerbil ball that floated on water that looked way easier to navigate than it appeared.
I'll never forget the year my daughter entered her flower arrangements into the competition and won several ribbons including first place. What a confidence boost and learning experience. From the organization required to complete the entry forms and present her creations to the judges, to the excitement of learning that she won it was yet another aspect of the fair that was significant.
No matter the adventure every visit culminated with the joy of riding home with your very own funnel cake and homemade lemonade if they were lucky. I know the fair was responsible for so many joyfulomen for both generations from childhood to motherhood. It is my pleasure to share a list of fair going opportunities for you and your family to explore. Why don't you oo make some memories!
