ATMTC's Petite Rouge: A Cajun Red Riding Hood

A Mardi Gras Twist on a Classic Tale

By Allison Fort February 15, 2015
What could go wrong when Petite Rouge, a little duck in a big red cape, sets off through the swamp to her grandma's house? Quite a bit, when a hungry gator named Claude crosses her path. Will Petite Rouge and her sidekick cat Tejean make it to gradma's house with their basket of gumbo, or will Claude catch up to them at Mardi Gras in New Orleans?

Adventure Theatre MTC puts a new spin on the classic story of little red riding hood with Petite Rouge: A Cajun Red Riding Hood. This family-friendly, Zydeco-driven musical was adapted from the book by Mike Artell and Jim Harris (available for purchase at Adventure Theatre's box office) by DC native Joan Cushing.

Petite Rouge is appropriate for children of all ages, and it's fun for adults too. Young children can definitely relate to Petite Rouge's frustrations over being told she's not old enough to do what she wants. Claude the alligator may bare his teeth and sing about eating Petite Rouge, but the show's music and humor keeps things light. I took my three year old son to see Petite Rouge, and he clapped along and danced in his seat throughout the show. With a one hour running time and no intermission, this is an especially good choice for the preschool crowd.

Petite Rouge: A Cajun Red Riding Hood runs through March 8 at Adventure Theatre MTC in Glen Echo Park. Tickets are $19 for ages one and up. A special sensory/autism friendly performance will take place on February 28 at 2:00 pm.
