Our country is facing a growing epidemic of childhood obesity.  The Center for Disease Control states that in 2008, more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese.  Children who struggle with weight problems are more likely to become overweight adolescents and adults, facing health concerns like diabetes and cardiovascular disease as a result, not to mention the emotional toll that stress and low self-esteem can take.

These days, with so many video games, iPods, websites, and TV programs occupying them, children tend to become less active and more sedentary so it’s not surprising they become less fit.  It’s estimated that children spend an average of 4 hours a day watching television.   That number continues to grow as video games and Ipads become more and more popular.

A healthy lifestyle that includes good nutrition and physical activity is the best way to prevent obesity in children.  That’s why it’s so important for parents to make exercise and fitness a top priority in their children’s lives in a fun, exciting way.  That is our mission at My Gym Children’s Fitness Center - to make fitness FUN for kids!  Our quality programs are age-appropriate and geared to children’s growing needs.  Over the past 30 years, we have established ourselves as the leader in our industry.  Children grow by leaps and bounds in our noncompetitive, nurturing environment.   Physical benefits include increased strength, balance, fitness, coordination, and motor skills.  Most importantly, My Gym Kids develop a greater level of confidence and self-esteem.

Meanwhile, here are some tips from My Gym for children to stay fit while at home.
FITNESS TIPS
1. Help your child find a playgroup in your neighborhood. It’s always more fun to play with a group of neighborhood friends. Playing burns more calories than sitting in front of the television.
2. Encourage him or her to walk the family dog or ride bikes together after school. It’s a fun way to stay fit and share a special time with your child and pet.
3. Make raw fruits and vegetables a regular snack to replace sugary and fattening treats many children tend to snack on.
4. Play with your child. Whether in the playground or in the backyard, games like basketball, soccer, tag or even hopscotch are a great way to stay fit.
5. Create a scavenger hunt and encourage your children to get up and “find treasures” or perform activities.
6. Walk your child to or from school. It’s a great way to exercise and connect with your child.
7. Share some chores together to make it fun. Helping fold clothes or helping put the dishes away in an assembly line are especially fun.
8. Depending on season, have your child rake leaves into a big pile then have him or her jump in. In the Spring, picking flowers is a great activity.
9. Let your child see you exercising. Better yet, have them join in.  It’s fun & helps develop a sense that keeping fit is important.
10. At the mall or supermarket park far from the entrance and walk just a bit further. And let your child push the shopping cart.
